End of Week 2 of the June yoga challenge

I did manage to do yoga everyday this week from Sunday to Saturday.

  • Sunday – 1/2 Intermediate
  • Monday – full Primary
  • Tuesday – full Intermediate
  • Wednesday – full Primary
  • Thursday – full Intermediate
  • Friday – full Primary
  • Saturday – rest day

In my last update, I thought that Tuesday was going to be a bit of a challenge since I was going to be at a seminar right after my morning practice.  As it turned out everything went smoothly.  No chaos happened that day to interfere with my practice.  I was able to complete a full Intermediate practice and get to the seminar on time.

Morning practice is the best time

One thing I learned last week is that doing your ygoa practice in the morning is the best time of day.  No one is up to make demands on your time.  I get up every morning at 6:00 am and get to my practice by 6:30 am.  There is no traffic on the roads and no car accidents to get in the way.  Everything runs realy smoothly.  A Sunday afternoon practice is much more difficult to get to.  There is lots of co-ordination to do with the rest of the family to make sure that the yoga practice fits into the schedule.

Here is an example of the choas that can happen. On Monday there was some chaos immediately after I completed my practice.  My prenatal teacher had arranged for a substitute teacher for that  evening’s class.  The substitute teacher was suddenly unavailable due to a death in the family.  We spent a couple hours looking for another substitute teacher and then ended up cancelling the class.  All of this happened after I had completed my morning practice rather than before.

Saturday is the rest day

It was a good thing that Saturday was a rest day considering all of the stuff that was going on in our life that day.

We were up at 5 am.  Shirley was working at a Pancake Breakfast at the church from 8 – 10:30 am and she had to be there at 6:00 am to get the coffee and tea started.

I had two classes to teach that morning.

Then we were both home preparing for the studio’s Quarterly Pot Luck that evening at our home.

We had lots of people show up for the Pot Luck.  You can see the pictures on Facebook. Then it was clean up afterwards and off to bed.  I am glad I did not have to fit a yoga practice into the day as well.

And last but not least, Saturday was our monthly celebration of our wedding anniversary.  It was number 428.  On of the students from the studio brought us flowers to celebrate the event.

Baddha Padmasana

The Baddha Padmasana story continues.  I injuried a muscle under my left shoulder blade while I was attempting to bind in this pose on Tuesday. I had successful bound in the pose for the first time on Thursday, last week.  I was really concerned that this injury would interfere with my yoga practice.  Even though the muscle complained in a minor way during my practice the next day, it did not prevent me from doing all of the poses.

After a few days of rest, I was able to bind with some care for the injuried muscle on Friday.   The bind is getting a little more comfortable but it is still a big struggle to get the right arm behind the back and have the right hand grab the big toe of the right foot.

Pattabhi Jois says “Practice and all is coming”.  All I need to do now is keep attempting to bind in this pose everyday and we will see how long it is before “all is coming”.

This week

There is a workshop at the studio on Sunday morning.  Sarah will be teaching everything you wanted know about Sun Salutes. This should not interfer with my practice, since it is in the afternoon on Sunday.

The rest of the week seems to be clear of any events that may get in the way of my morning practice.

June 7 – Monday1) What I did today (the task I’m doing for 30 days)
I got my full yoga practice completed this morning (6:30 am).  The complete Primary series of Ashtanga yoga in 75 minutes.

There was some chaos immediately after I completed my practice.  My prenatal teacher had arranged for a substitute teacher for this evenings class.  The substitute teacher was suddenly unavailable due to a death in the family.  We spent a couple hours looking for another substitute and then ended up cancelling the class.
