How the Resistance game keeps moving your yoga practice forward

The game is more exciting when you keep score.

The game is more exciting when you keep score.

The tennis match has been going on for a while now. Alice checks the scoreboard.  She sees that she is slightly ahead, but her opponent is a tough one.  They have not given up.  They keep coming back.  They have been returning her serves with precision and it is all she can do to win the rally and mark up another point for herself.

Now imagine the same game if there was no scoreboard.  How different the game would be.  If you did not know what the score was you would be less concerned about your opponent winning a point.  Are you ahead or is your opponent ahead.  No one knows.

A tennis game without a scoreboard would not be as exciting and as satisfying.  The scoreboard is what keeps our interest high and our attention focused on scoring the next point and winning against our opponent.

Your yoga practice is very much like Alice’s tennis match.  If you do not keep score then your opponent will win.  Your opponent in the yoga game is resistance.  And without a scoreboard your opponent will win the match.

What is resistance

Resistance is you and your mind deciding that you do not want to go to yoga class tonight.  Resistance comes in many forms.

You can make excuses like I have homework to do.

You can say that you are tired and need to rest.

Inertia can set in, you have not been to yoga class in a while and it is going to be too hard to start again.

You were much more enthusiastic when you first started and now your enthusiasm is very low.

Resistance comes in many forms and disguises.  The resistance game can help you to defeat resistance no matter what form it comes in.

What is the resistance game

The resistance game is very simple.  The essence is that you keep score of how many times you get to yoga class and how many times that resistance has kept you from going to yoga class and staying at home.

How to play the resistance game

You need a scoreboard and some sort of marker.

Your scoreboard can be pretty much anything as long as you can mark on it. It can be a sheet of paper, cardboard, an erasable white board or some other surface that you can write on.

Your marker can be a pen, a pencil, an erasable marker, a crayon.  It does not really matter as long as it can make marks on the scoreboard.

Now that you have your scoreboard and marker, you need a place to put it.  This is an important step.  The scoreboard needs to be somewhere in your home where you are going to see it a lot through out your day.

When we were at Alice’s tennis match everyone could see the scoreboard.  It was in a very prominent place.

Find a prominent place where you can post your scoreboard.  If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen then stick your scoreboard on the fridge.

Now that you have your scoreboard posted and your marker handy you need to take the next step and lay out the resistance game.

Setup the game

On the scoreboard you have three rows of information.

The first row is the name of the game. For example the name of the game could be Yoga Class Attendance  You can use anything that you want, but since you are working on getting you to yoga practice this seemed like a good name to me.

On the next row you put the name of the home team. Alice is playing tennis above so we will use Alice as the name of the home team. On the row beneath that you put the name of the opposing team.  For this game the name of the opposing team is  Resistance.

When you are done your scoreboard will look something like this.

Yoga Class Attendance
Alice
Resistance

Keep score

The next step in the resistance game is to add tally marks to the appropriate row of the scoreboard.  When you go to yoga class add a tally mark to the Alice row and when you decide not to go to yoga class put a tally mark in the Resistance row.

Yup that is all there is to the resistance game.  Keep track of how many times you actually get to yoga class.  This is a real simple game, but there are several things that make the resistance game really powerful.

Why play the resistance game

There are many reasons why you should play the resistance game.

– Remember your Successes

Most of the time we remember our failures and forget about our successes.  We tend to magnify our failures and minimize our successes.  The resistance game reminds us of all the times that we have made it yoga class and we can see at a glance that we are way ahead of resistance.

– Be competitive

The resistance game plays to our competitive nature.  If you have ever played any sports you probably noticed that they always keep score.  Without the score you will not know who is winning.  Keeping score keeps our enthusiasm up and our focus on playing the game.

You may think that resistance is winning because there have been a few challenging days recently but when you check the scoreboard you discover that sure resistance has won a few rounds recently but that your score is still way ahead of resistance.

– Increase enthusiasm

The resistance game will build your enthusiasm to keep going.  When you are tired and discouraged a glance at the scoreboard will show you that you have been doing really well at this resistance game.  Adding another mark to your teams tally will boost your enthusiasm and push resistance even further back into the corner.

– Beat resistance

Putting a mark in the resistance column is a tough thing to do.  You are admitting defeat. Resistance has won for tonight and you are going to stay at home and not go to class.  You will feel so much better when you put that mark in your column and get out the door to yoga class.

Next steps

Create your own scoreboard out of whatever material you have available.

Put your scoreboard where you can see it all of the time.  The fans at the tennis match can always see the scoreboard, why should your resistance game be any different.

When you feel resistance taking hold and that you might not go to yoga class tonight, walk up to the resistance scoreboard and consider putting a mark down for resistance rather than for your home team.

Mark one down for your team and head out the door for another yoga class.  You will be glad that you did.
